Justin Schmitz

Director of Public Works and Mobility

City of Lone Tree, CO

Justin Schmitz was hired as the Director of Public Works and Mobility for the City of Lone Tree in
November 2018. As the Director of Public Works and Mobility for the City of Lone Tree, Mr. Schmitz
oversees Transportation Engineering and Operations, Capital Project Management, Development
Review, Facility Management as well as Contracted services including Street Maintenance, Snow
Maintenance, and Solid Waste Services. Currently Mr. Schmitz is overseeing the implementation of
adaptive signal technology along the Yosemite Street Corridor with the cities of Centennial and
Greenwood Village.
Mr. Schmitz previously worked for the City and County of Denver in various roles, most recently as the
City Traffic Engineer. During his time with Denver he oversaw a wide range of innovations and projects
from helping to work on Major Freeway and Interchange projects, the installation of the A-line and West
lines with R.T.D., the installation of the first protected bike lane, and the implementation of the first
Autonomous Shuttle Vehicle operating within the Right-of-way.
Prior to his work with the Denver, Mr. Schmitz worked for Los Angeles County on transportation related
programs and projects.
Mr. Schmitz has a Civil Engineering Degree from Colorado State University and is licensed as a
professional engineer in Colorado.
The City of Lone Tree is a national leader in smart cities initiatives. It was one of 16 cities selected for
Transportation for America and Sidewalk Labs’ Smart Cities Collaborative, and is a founding member of
the Colorado Smart Cities Alliance. In 2019, Lone Tree partnered with Via to re-launch an updated on-
demand shuttle bus.
