Michael Hammett is the chief innovation officer and director of the Office of Innovation in the Phoenix City Manager’s Office, leading innovation, prototyping and testing, advancing the strategic use of data, and Smart Cities. Michael leads the city’s What Works Cities initiative, a global standard of excellence for data-driven governments, with Phoenix being certified at the Platinum-level. He led two Bloomberg Philanthropies Mayors Challenge processes, with Phoenix being named a finalist in 2018 for the HeatReady Phoenix solution to address rising urban temperatures, and in 2021, being named a winning city to launch a data-driven Mobile Career Unit initiative. He holds an M.S. Global Technology & Development from the School for the Future of Innovation in Society, College of Global Futures, Arizona State University, and serves on the Arizona Governor’s Commission on Service and Volunteerism.
