Geographic Information System (GIS) Analyst

Mark Cave is a geographic information system (GIS) analyst for the City of Virginia Beach Information Technology Department. He joined the City five years ago and brings over 20 years of experience in GIS/GPS technology to the IT Department’s Data and Information Management team. He currently serves as the City’s GIS Lead for Public Safety and the technical lead for the Waze Connected Citizens Program (partnership, technology and implementation). In these roles, Mark helps connect Virginia Beach with its citizens and visitors to improve mobility, safety and quality of life. Previously, Mark worked as a systems analyst and engineering lead for the U.S. Coast Guard’s One View (CG1V) project in Portsmouth, Virginia. He was a key member of a GIS team at Langley Air Force Base in Hampton that won the Air Force Chief of Staff Team Excellence Award in 2006 for implementing the Air Force Geospatial Data Portal. Mark received his Bachelor of Science degree from Old Dominion University in 1998; MS Certificate in Spatial Data Science in 1999;

GIS Professional Certification in 2008; and IT Security Certification in 2015. He is passionate about providing mentoring opportunities in geospatial data science and “geo-enabling” others. A Virginia Beach resident since 1987, he enjoys music, golf, saltwater fishing, water sports and spending time with his family and friends.
