Theresa Kuhns serves as Chief Executive Officer for The Maryland
Municipal League (MML), a professional association serving as the voice
for Maryland’s cities and towns. MML represents the voice of over 1.5
million Marylanders and empowers local elected officials with various
education and engagement opportunities. As CEO, Kuhns is responsible
for the day-to-day management of the association, overall board
governance and has the honor to lead the 15 member staff team in its
practice areas inclusive of member engagement, education, events and
advocacy.
In addition to her executive role, Kuhns also serves as a Board of Trustee for the Local Government Insurance
Trust and Board of Trustee for NLC Mutual Insurance Company. Kuhns was also appointed to co-chair a
transition team for incoming Maryland Comptroller Brooke Lierman with a focus on engaging local
governments.
Previously, Kuhns served as the Vice President of Government Affairs for the Southern Maryland Association
of Realtors®. SMAR advocates on behalf of 170,000 property owners in Southern Maryland and Kuhns
represented SMAR members at the local, state and national level. Her 20+ years public affairs background
includes her tenure with the United States Chamber of Commerce, where she spent several election cycles
managing its national political program and fundraising efforts with great success. She then moved on to take
the helm of the national chairman's office, strategically marketing Board leadership on the ground, both
domestically and internationally. Kuhns worked with the Greater Washington Board of Trade in a similar
management role directing member involvement, board governance and events teams. She next moved to
the private sector at Aristotle International, managing a professional services team of 12, representing over
90 clients, and a multi-million-dollar budget. Kuhns served as one of the first women on the senior
management team.
Kuhns has served on the Calvert County Economic Development Authority; United Way of Southern
Maryland Board of Directors; United Way of Southern Maryland merger and executive search committees;
and the Calvert County Chamber of Commerce Business Advisory Group. She previously was a member of
the Charles County Military Alliance Council and an active participant in the Rural Maryland Council.
Additionally, Kuhns completed a two-year appointment service on the National Association of Realtors
Government Affairs Advisory Committee. She is a proud graduate of Leadership Southern Maryland Class
of 2019, Georgetown University McDonough School of Business Executive Leadership Program 2005 and
Kutztown University of Pennsylvania 2001. Kuhns and her family reside in Huntingtown, MD.
